The strongest consensus is a standard-tuned, capo-free D-major arrangement in compound 6/8. The core accompaniment is a repeating arpeggio rather than continuous strumming: a bass note followed by upper chord tones, commonly described as bass–3–2–1–2–3. The intro and verses use D/G arpeggios; the chorus uses Em/A arpeggios; the bridge shifts to F#/Bm and then C/G with a broader, more chordal or power-chord-like treatment. The outro can continue the verse arpeggio into the fade. Tempo sources disagree mainly because some notate the dotted-quarter pulse at about 63 BPM, while guitar resources count eighth notes or use a different beat convention and report about 94 BPM. For audio alignment, approximately 63 dotted-quarter BPM—or approximately 94 eighth-note BPM—is the safer interpretation.
